Queens Man Pulls Gun, Cuts Fuel Station Line

Queens, NY – Patience is waning on the coast post-Sandy, and while many have stepped up and stood out as heroes, there’s also a darker side to being a post-crisis American, and darker stories of desperation coming on the heels of the super-storm. Case in point: A Queens man who was arrested for pulling a gun as tempers flared over fuel shortages.

The few gas stations left open in the city are patrolled by police and New Yorkers wait in line for hours to fill up, reports MSN. Indeed, things seem dire in The Big Apple. The fight for fuel in New York is growing frightening, even violent. As many without homes, heat, and food desperately scramble for precious fuel to keep their generators running, demand dramatically spikes while supply struggles to meet it.

To wit, 35-year-old Sean Bailey of Queens seemed to reach his breaking point, cutting in line at a gas station on Thursday, and then pulling a gun on the person who called him out for it.
Bailey was arrested on charges of menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, reports The Kennebec Journal.

If Bailey is convicted, he will face 15 years in prison.
Our sympathies continually pour out to victims of Hurricane Sandy, and our hearts are with those involved in such sad stories. Meanwhile, praise is to be heaped upon those who have stepped up in the aftermath of Sandy, particularly our politicians who have largely laid aside partisan politics to come together as Americans.
No matter how desperate things are, nothing is worth the violence or 15 years in prison. Regardless, our hopes are with all those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Bodies Of Two Staten Island Boys Swept Away By Hurricane Sandy Found

The bodies of two Staten Island boys who were swept out of their mother’s arms by Hurricane Sandy have been found, the New York Post reports.

Police arrived at the home of the boys’ mother Glenda Moore Thursday to deliver the news.

Moore’s sons, 2-year-old Brandon and 4-year-old Connor, were found four days later under debris and trees that had been downed by the storm. The bodies were found about 20 yards apart around 10 am Thursday morning.

A family friend of Moore’s said, “It’s a shock for everybody right now. She’s in pain.”

Moore and her husband Damien, stopped by a funeral home to make arrangements for their sons. A friend described the boys as “the joy of their lives.”

Brandon and Connor Moore were separated from their mother Monday night as she tried to lead them away from the destruction of the hurricane. Moore had been trying to get to her mother’s house in Brooklyn, but her Ford Explorer stalled along Father Capodanno Boulevard as the street began to flood.

Moore called her husband and then carried the boys out of the SUV, but the water caused her to lose her grip. Moore sought help from nearby houses but was turned away by the people who answered their doors. Moore faced the storm alone, desperately trying to find her children, until rescuers found her clinging to porch post hours later.

The boys were found about 30 yards from the corner of Father Capodanno Boulevard and McLaughlin Street, according to law enforcement sources.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the deaths of Brandon and Connor Moore were among the worst tragedies of the hurricane ...

Apple Decides To Remove Emoji Apps From The App Store

Back in 2008, Apple added native support for Emoji icons in iPhone Firmware 2.2, which was available only to iPhone users on Japan’s SoftBank network.
But that didn’t stop hackers from figuring out a way to enable Emoji icons using a simple hack. Developers also released apps that allowed users to unlock the emoji keyboard.
But since Apple added native support for Emoji icons for all the users in iOS 5 last year, it seems to have finally decided to remove these Emoji apps from the App Store. MacRumors reports that it has sent notices like the one seen below informing developers that their Emoji apps have been removed from the App Store.
Hello XXXX,
We are writing to let you know your app, XXXX, has been removed from the App Store because it is no longer needed to unlock Emoji.
Since iOS 6 now provides Emoji support to all users, your app is no longer in compliance with the App Store Review Guidelines <https://developer.apple.com/appstore/resources/approval/guidelines.html>
2.12 Apps that are not very useful, are simply web sites bundled as apps, or do not provide any lasting entertainment value may be rejected
If you have questions about the removal of your application, please contact App Review at appreview@apple.com. Please include the App ID and the name of your application in your email.
Thank you and best regards,
App Review
As MacRumors points out, while the notice mentions that the apps have been removed, a number of Emoji apps are still available in the App Store, so it remains to be seen when the apps will vanish from the App Store.
While we don’t think Apple should remove apps from the App Store because they’ve started offering the functionality natively in iOS, in this particular case we think it makes sense as some developers are selling Emoji apps for $0.99 in the App Store, which is essentially tricking users to pay for a feature that is natively available for free.
What do you think about Apple’s decision to remove the Emoji apps from the App Store?

iPad 4 Teardown Reveals A6X Chip With 1GB RAM, LG Display

Hot on the heels of disassembling the iPad mini, iFixit has also disassembled the 4th generation iPad, which also went on sale in 34 countries earlier today.
The 4th generation iPad looks exactly like the iPad 3 (new iPad), but it comes with a number of improvements such as Apple’s new faster A6X chip, FaceTime HD camera, expanded LTE support and Apple’s new Lightning connector.

Not surprisingly, iFixit hasn’t discovered too many changes in Apple’s new iPad. Here are some of the highlights:
  • One of the major differences in the 4th generation iPad is the Lightning connector. But iFixit points out Apple didn’t save any space by switching to the new connector which is 80% smaller than the 30-pin connector as the Lightning cable sits in a frame the same size as the 30-pin dock connector (upper). iFixit felt it was disappointing as Apple could have used the space for bigger, better speakers.
  • Apple had used an LG Display in the iPad 4 unit that iFixit had disassembled, their iPad mini unit came with a display made by Samsung.
  • It has the same 3.7 volts, 43 Whr battery as the iPad 3.
  • It is powered by the faster A6X chip with 1GB RAM. It has the same RAM as the iPad 3 and iPhone 5.
  • The 1.2 megapixel FaceTime HD camera is thicker than iPad 3′s 0.3 megapixel FaceTime camera, but still manages to fit in the same space.
  • iPad 4 received a low repairability score as the front panel is glued to the glass , which could increase the changes of cracking the glass and due to other factors.
  • iPad 4 includes the following chips:
    • Apple A6X Processor
    • Hynix H2JTDG8UD2MBR 16 GB NAND Flash
    • 2 x 4Gb Elpida LP DDR2 = 1 GB DRAM in two packages
    • Apple 338S1116 Cirrus Logic Audio Codec
    • 343S0622-A1 Dialog Semi PMIC
    • Apple 338S1077 Cirrus Logic Class D Amplifier
    • Broadcom BCM5974 Touch Screen Controller
    • Broadcom BCM5973A1 Touch Screen Controller
    • Texas Instruments CD3240B0 Touch Screen Line Driver
    • 2 x Fairchild BCHAH/FDMC Voltage Regulator / Reference
    • Murata 339S0171 Broadcom BCM4334 WiFi Module

Crane dangling off Midtown building's roof: FDNY

More than 100 firefighters and police officers rushed to Midtown Monday afternoon after a construction crane atop a building collapsed at around 2:30 p.m., leaving its boom dangling off the roof, officials said.
The building, at 157 W 57th Street, is under construction and reportedly scheduled to open next year as the city's tallest luxury apartment building.
No injuries had been reported, according to an FDNY spokesman, who said the building had not collapsed.
"The boom of the crane is hanging off the side of the building," he said.
The spokesman said officials do not believe anyone is in the building, but that nearby buildings would be evacuated as a precaution. Police officers were blocking off streets from pedestrians and helping with evacuation efforts, according to the NYPD.
Earlier in the day, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said New Yorkers shouldn't be worried about construction sites around the city.
“We have worked very hard to make sure all cranes and construction sites are battered down, and we’ve had so far no indication of any debris blowing off a construction site," he said during a news conference. "But as the winds get worse, our precautions get tested more, and you never know."
FDNY and Port Authority officials dismissed reports of a broken crane at the World Trade Center site Monday afternoon.
"We have crews up on the 90th floor and we confirm there’s no issues with the crane at One World Trade Center," a Port Authority official told amNewYork.

Jury Convicts Man for Orally Raping Baby to Death

Evelynne (inset) and Steven Deuman

Steven Deuman, 26, of Suttons Bay, Michgan, has been found guilty of the August 2011 murder of his daughter, Evelynne Deuman, 15 weeks old. The young father was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated sexual assault for suffocating his child during an oral rape. Deuman told police that he went out for a cigarette and when he returned to their mobile home, he found the baby lying on the floor unconscious, not breathing, bleeding from the nose, with a used condom in her mouth. DNA testing showed Deuman’s DNA on the inside of the prophylactic, and the child’s on the outside.
Deuman did not call 911, but called his wife and told her that the baby had choked on a condom. However, according to the prosecution, “This was no accident. She couldn’t roll over, much less crawl. … She certainly wasn’t capable of overcoming the obstacles on her bed, the pillows, to end up on the floor. Even if (she did), how is she going to suck that condom up?” Not only did jurors have to endure the disturbing evidence of this case, but they also heard testimony from witnesses describing how Deuman allegedly sexually abused them as children. Jurors took less than 30 minutes to convict. Deuman faces life in prison.
